Anyone who has ever been involved in rugby will tell you that it is more than just a sport. If it was just a sport, nobody would play - it hurts, the rules are difficult to understand and you generally don’t get a swimmer’s physique. So why do old rugby players always seem to talk about how great it is and reminisce about the good times?

There is something about rugby, something special. Maybe it's the chivalrous, gladiatorial spirit that characterises the sport. There is a level of honesty in endeavour and shared responsibility on the pitch that leads to mutual respect off of it, between team-mates and opponents alike, that doesn't exist in any other sport we know. There is also a weird kind of humour to the game and those who play it, because when you think about it, the concept of getting your kicks from being knocked around for 80 minutes is a bit bonkers!

So here we are. We are the Heian Crusaders – the Heian Cru for short. We’re here to spread the rugby gospel in beautiful Kyoto. We’re here to build relationships. We’re here to create the good times that those old boys talk about when they get together.

 

The Heian Cru is a spin-off club of the Tokyo Crusaders RFC and was inspired by the camaraderie achieved between strangers in that club. We are here to develop our own history, our own stories, and share in those of our friends.
